Project Description

The challenge faced in the metropolitan subway system was due to the location of the infrastructure. The subway is for the most built underground. This particular conformation creates a limitation for signal propagation, making it extremely difficult to have data connectivity and even phone calls. This challenge is specially present in the subway service tunnel, between the stations, where the mobile signal must reach moving train carriages and all its passengers.

Subway lines have three principal areas: passageway between the station and the exit, docks where people wait and transit between trains and service tunnels. In the three public subway lines of Milan, in order to address the coverage challenges, CommsCon designed and installed a specific DAS system, made up of many active devices (remote units) connected to antennas, implementing radiating points. In its deployment two types of antennas where used (bidirectional and panel) for the ceiling conformation, since was no consent to deploy omnidirectional antennas. Active devices are located in each station, inside the technical room and are connected with the antennas, by coaxial cable.

The services of CommsCon include not only the design and construction of the plant, but also the relative permits and authorizations required by law. CommsCon deals directly with authorizations in the event that the area is subject to environmental, landscape or monumental restrictions. CommsCon guarantees the interface with all the authorities and bodies involved.

In order to guarantee the maximal system efficiency, CommsCon also provides:
– Commissioning and delivery: the configuration and activation of the system.
– Supervision and maintenance: remote control of the system for its optimization, alarm handling for maintenance and in case of failure, a maintenance team is sent to solve the issue.
